Quantum Flux (officially "Mazarin-Rashoud flux"[1], colloquially just "flux") arises when novas or other eximorphs manipulate quantum energies. In a sense, Quantum Flux is a form of interference between quantum energies and the structure of matter (or the nova's own body), somewhat akin to the process of supersaturation. This Flux powers a nova's abilities. While generally harmless, within novas, Flux accumulates when their powers are used, pushing the nova further from baseline humanity. This causes Transformations and Transcendence as their bodies try to adapt to the unusual energies coursing through them, like the shores of a riverbank shifting as the flow of water increases.[2][3] This buildup of flux may be dissipated via the practice of Grounding[4], or alternately may be used to direct one's Transcendence via the chrysalis process.[5]
Due to its deleterious side effects on nova psychology, particularly in the wake of the Aberrant War, Quantum Flux is often referred to as "Corruption," although technically that refers to a different (albeit related) process. This confusion is exacerbated due to terms like "Quantum Flux disease" and "Quantum Flux Zone," which both refer to the effects of excess Corruption, and not Quantum Flux by itself.[6][7]
Quantum Flux does, however, interfere with the flow of subquantum energies, making it more difficult for psions to use their powers within a QFZ.[8]
Although commonly abbreviated by novas and Project Utopia as simply "flux," Quantum Flux should not be confused with the Flux energies employed by Talents.[3]
Background Information[]
- In a general sense, "flux" refers to the action of something flowing. In a medical context, flux is an abnormal discharge of blood or other matter from or within the body. Quantum Flux therefore covers both contexts.
