A latent is a human with the potential to become a nova or psion. It's not known if latency is shared -- i.e. if being a latent means you could be triggered as a nova or dunked in a Prometheus Chamber -- or if the same term just happened to be used for both groups -- i.e. a latent psion may not necessarily also be a latent nova.
Aberrant Era[]
There is no known means of detecting latency, or of estimating how many latents may exist.[1]
Æon Era[]
Fewer than one in 10,000 people are believed to be latents.[2]
Normally psionic potential has two branches, the naturally-occurring psiad and the latent. Latents are normally a genetic "dead end," as the human possesses the potential but not the ability. In game terms, they can store psi but have no ability to spend it, although they may occasionally subconsciously fire off an effect.
However, psiads cannot be immersed in a Prometheus Chamber. The chambers are specifically designed to unlock that potential in latents, allowing them to ultimately surpass psiads in raw power.
Latents can easily become triggered to most of the common Aptitudes, but require a relatively rare higher degree of latency to be triggered to Teleportation or Quantakinesis.
