The Krugu Vorov, known colloquially as the Circle, are a Russian mystery cult, a loose collection of individuals who enact the will of the Thieves in Law, the emperors of the Russian underworld. They oversee activities in Twilight.<[1]
History[]
In the 9th century, the Rurukid Prince, Oleg the Seer, needed to delicately balance power with his region's fragile alliances, and was thus prevented from striking rivals directly. Under cloak of darkness, a loyal servant named Ilya Alexeev eliminated those threats. Oleg never ask questions, and Ilya never asked for anything but the right to serve.
The Krugu Vorov held to their duties until the early 17th centrury when the dynasty they served collapsed. Seven families emerged as hidden power brokers behind the subsequent rulers; the Krugu Vorov swore fealty to these men -- the original Thieves in Law -- rather than the usurpers to the Russian throne.
Organization[]
There are three circles which show your dedication and progress: the Sheep are the newest recruits, the Shepherds make up the majority of the ranks, and the Overseers organize the operation of cells around the world. The "fourth circle" are the Seven Princes, the leaders of the Thieves in Law. The "fifth circle" is the Ilya, the spiritual successor to Ilya Alexeev. Only with the sponsorship of one of the Seven Princes of the Thieves in Law can an Overseer rise to the position of Ilya, who swears fealty to those Princes.
The current Ilya is Nadezhda Illyinichna Szetka, a former street kid from Moscow.
The Grandchildren of Baba Yaga are considered anathema by the other Societies: they kill without contract, and freely target other Assassins.
The Circle of Venerable Elders are for those older Assassins. Since one cannot leave the Krugu Vorov, these experts are assigned to training and mentoring younger Krugu Vorov, before "retiring" to retirement communities full of former Assassins.
