Corruption is a lasting subatomic degradation of both living things and inanimate objects, caused by Aberrants overusing their Quantum powers, or in some novas who possessed a relatively rare form of instability. The damage first affected the nova, then when sufficiently Corrupted, it would then affect others around it.
All the Aberrants who returned to the solar system in 2105 were massively Corrupted, leading most researchers to assume that Corruption was a natural result of the long-term use of Quantum powers. This led to Corruption often being mistaken for, and used as, a slang term for Quantum Flux.[1]
However, Corruption-free novas were later found on the planet Eden in 2115.
Studies of Edenite novas show that some forms of Quantum Flux produce Corruption. Most do not. Novas are more likely to erupt in high areas of Quantum Flux, but those areas on Earth are also heavily Corrupted, so novas who erupt there likewise tend to be Corrupted from the beginning.[2]

- It's not confirmed, but based on their descriptions, it's possible that Corruption may be the same phenomenon as Transcendence.
