Assassins are a specialized form of Talent (a paramorph). While Talents are generalists whose abilities are difficult to distinguish from skill or luck, Assassins are specialists. As a result of their narrower focus, their abilities push the boundaries of believability into the overtly paranatural.[1]
For example, the path of a projectile might be curved, or the Assassin might briefly take on the appearance of another. Even so, most of these Masteries are explained away as gifts or special training known only by a chosen few.
Given that their use of flux is "deeper" than other Talents, this creates an effect known as the Shadow.
Assassins gather together in Societies where they learn to use Masteries.
Daylight, Twilight, and the Shadow[]
The three "worlds" in this sense are not different locations -- all of them take place on the same Earth. The first two are more social descriptors about the kind of life you live. The Shadow is an effect reinforced by ambient flux energies.
The mundane world most people experience is the Daylight world. It's also the world in which most Assassins' families live.
The Twilight is the half-world of organized crime, con artists, and thieves. People in Twilight brush up against both the Daylight and Shadow. Some societies exist in Twilight, not being fully part of either the Daylight or Shadow, such as Les Fantômes.
The Shadow is the world of Assassins and their Societies. The world of the Shadow is often invisible or overlooked by the Daylight, their activities ignored or subconsciously dismissed. As long as a modicum of effort is employed to conceal their activities -- say, suppressors on weapons held under a suit jacket -- then two Assassins might have a gunfight in a public place with no one else the wiser.
Likewise, despite Hotel Asylia being theoretically open to the public, their presence in the Shadow ensures they're only ever frequented by Assassins and their associates; a random tourist will never accidentally walk in.
Assassin Template[]
- Moment of Inspiration - The moment where in an assassin became Inspired.
- Assign Masteries - Instead of Gifts, Assassins get Masteries which make them supernaturally adept at killing others.
Background Information[]
- Given that killing others has been happening for the entirety of human existence, it's natural that this would be honed like a knife edge, and a specialized form of Talent would arise from the activity. It's unknown if there are other similar types of specialized Talent based around a basic human activity, but they would likewise probably trace their origins back to antiquity.
