The Æon Society is a charitable organization founded in June 1923 by philanthropist Maxwell Anderson Mercer. Founded on the guiding principles of Hope, Sacrifice, and Unity, the Æon Society charged itself with investigating, understanding, and monitoring unusual events in the world, particularly Inspired phenomena.[1]
History[]
The Adventure! Era[]
The beginning of the Adventure! era was also the beginning of the Æon Society.
In July 1922, Dr. Sir Calvin Hammersmith invited a number of VIPs to witness the debut demonstration of his new invention, the Telluric Engine. Among those in attendance was his first patron, philanthropist Maxwell Anderson Mercer. Mercer brought along a young student friend, Michael Damien Donighal.
Sadly, the demonstration went awry and the engine exploded, incinerating Dr. Hammersmith.
Many survivors were imbued with strange abilities, particularly those closest to the blast, including Mercer and Donighal. Unfortunately, after evacuating a few other survivors outside the burning Hammersmith grounds, Mercer vanished.
After he reappeared in early 1923, Mercer -- inspired by tales of the Esoteric Order of the Æons from his father -- created the Æon Society for Gentlemen[2][3][4][5]. The original founding members were Mercer himself, Jake "Danger Ace" Stefokowski, Doctor Primoris, "Safari" Jack Tallon, Professor Benjamin Franklin Dixon, "Crackshot" Annabelle Lee Newfield, and Whitley Styles.
The "for Gentlemen" appellation was dropped before the decade was out, as even the founders included Annabelle Lee Newfield, not a "gentleman" by any definition. With great forethought, Max wanted the Society to be as inclusive as possible.
The society continued its mission to explore the world, and to discover and research the strange and unusual things they discovered, and to share that knowledge with the world to further humanity's understanding. Æon wants its members, as a microcosm for humanity, to reach their fullest potential.
Although they have a reputation for confronting and defeating those who would do the world and its people harm -- mostly due to its origins as a loose club of individuals and less as a formal organization -- official policy is to stay uninvolved and monitor situations from afar. Members have, however been successful in having Mercer reconsider the policy.[6]
The Modern Era[]
Nova Age[]
Margaret Mercer, Maxwell Mercer's granddaughter (and presumably Michael Mercer's daughter) was the head of the Æon Society when N-Day occurred. She managed to convince the United Nations that the Æon Society was the best to handle the Nova situation.
The Aberrant Era[]
Following the devastating Aberrant War, the world entered a period of recovery. The Society's charitable efforts stepped up to assist in the global recovery and reconstruction, rebranding and pledging themselves as a Covenant to humanity.
